In the simplest term, carp fishing rods are a tool used to catch fish. A length of fishing line is attached to a long, flexible rod or pole with one end terminating in a hook for catching the fish. The fishing rod should not be confused with the fishing pole as the term 'fishing rod' refers to a more complicated mechanical instrument fitted with a reel and line guides. Carp fishing rods vary in length, coming in sizes between 24 inches and 16 feet. The longer the rod, the greater the mechanical advantage in casting.
Other types of fishing rod include fly carp fishing rods. Fly carp fishing rods are long, flexible rods that are sometimes made of split bamboo but more recently made from manmade materials. As their name indicates, fly rods are designed to cast a fly. Fly rods tend to have a single, large diameter line guide referred to as stripping guide, with a number of smaller looped guides known as snake guides spaced along the rod to help control the movement of the relatively thick fly line. To aid in the freedom of movement required to cast with a fly rod, there is usually little to no handle (or 'butt') on the rod extending below the fishing reel. Fly fishing is also a highly competitive sport with the World Fly Fishing Championship title currently been held by two competitors from the UK.
The concept of the fishing rod dates back to Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. In times when synthetic materials such as fibreglass and graphite composites were still many years away, the fishing rod was generally made from split Tonkin bamboo, Calcutta Reed or ash wood as it was necessary that it was made light, tough and pliable. The butts were frequently made of maple. Even today, Tonkin split bamboo rods are still popular in fly fishing.
